2025 Anti-Gun Bills: Oregon’s Next Fight

The Upcoming Legislative Session: A Challenging Road Ahead

The newest Oregon legislative session begins on Monday, and while it’s easy to hope for a smooth start, we need to be realistic—this could very well be a difficult session for gun owners in Oregon with 11 bills related to firearms proposed so far.

 

A Storm Brewing: Gun Control Proposals on the Horizon

The writing is on the wall. Oregon lawmakers are gearing up to introduce a raft of new gun control measures, and if passed, they would severely limit the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
Among the most concerning proposals are:
  • Bans on gun ownership for 18–20 year-olds
  • Bans on specialty triggers
  • Prohibitions on concealed carry in public buildings and their surrounding properties
  • Lengthy waiting periods, bureaucratic hurdles for background checks, and increased regulation
  • Expanded, legislative, implementation of Measure 114
There are proposals on the table that include extended waiting periods, additional paperwork for background checks, and the further implementation of Measure 114, which is still tied up in the courts. However, recent changes may complicate things even more. The fees have more than doubled, and the time required to process permits has been significantly extended. While many might hope this will be resolved through the courts, it’s important to note that the bill includes provisions that could direct legal challenges to courts that may be less favorable to gun owners. With Democrats holding the majority, it’s clear that they are determined to advance stricter gun laws in Oregon, despite the challenges ahead.

The Courts: A Long and Costly Battle

Many are hoping that the courts will step in and protect us from this wave of legislation, but the reality is less than reassuring. Legal battles are long, expensive, and unpredictable. While we’ve had some courtroom victories, the pace of these cases, coupled with ongoing appeals and delays, means that much of what we’ve fought for remains in limbo.
We can’t rely on the courts alone to stop the coming onslaught of anti-gun measures.
